We have lived away from our families for more than 20 years now and the holidays are never quite the same when its just the three of us. In Houston, we developed a wonderful tradition with our framily (friends that are like family) and spent Thanksgiving with them and their family. It was wonderful food and the company even better.
We were able to score a turkey for dinner today, but it was a bit of a challenge. Turkey doesn’t seem to be as popular here. The Dutch equivalent of Costco, Sligro, had whole frozen turkeys so we were able to get one there. We opted for the middle size, they came in sizes, which is 3.5 kg and cost about €30. For those of you who prefer pounds, that translates to a 7.7 lb bird at €3.89 per pound. So its a tiny, expensive turkey. The local expats store, Kellys also had whole turkeys as well as turkey breasts. So we will probably try their turkey next time.
I made a beautiful looking pecan pie, unfortunately, it didn’t really set so it was runny inside. The ingredients are just a bit different here and not all of our standard recipes work quite the same. I will have to experiment with it again. You will notice from the picture below that I used a springform pan rather than a pie dish, I don’t have one here, so it is more of a “deep dish” pie. Thankfully despite the consistency, it tasted delicious.
